Have you ever felt invisible and that no one knows you or cares about you. Do you know someone that feels this way? This is a very common feeling. Feeling alone and insignificant can be very destructive, leading to a life of despair or violence--hurting oneself or others. Psychologists have made a very good living by helping people overcome these feelings.
The Bible tells us that we have been created in the image and likeness of God.
Genesis 1:24-28
"And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good. 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
What does this mean for you and me?
First, you and I have been created in the image of God and are more special than the rest of God's creation. Yes, you are special because you were born in the image and likeness of God. We are not an accident created by the random pooling of living cells.
Second, being in God's image and likeness indicates a special relationship that no other part of God's creation enjoys. Primates are the closest of God's creation to mankind, yet they fall short of God's image and likeness. We are God's image bearers
Third, as God bearers, we can communicate with God. God knows our mind and heart (Jeremiah 21:1, Matthew 9:4). Prayer is simply communicating with God with spoken words or even thoughts.
Fourth, being created in God's image and likeness indicates that God has a plan and a purpose for all mankind. This includes me and especially you.
It is no accident that you are reading this right now. The Holy Spirit brought you hear so that you can hear these words:
You are special to God!
You are created for a purpose and plan!
God wants to communicate with you!
Especially, God loves you!
